An unmissable monument of the city, the Palais des Papes stands tall and dominates the city of Avignon and the Rhône. It constitutes the most important Gothic palace in the West (equivalent in volume to 4 Gothic cathedrals). It is the symbol of the influence of the church on the Christian West in the 14th century. Built from 1335 in less than 20 years, it is the work mainly of two building popes, Benedict XII and his successor Clement VI.
